Abstract

Objective The study aims to determine the impact of changing the thermal insulation characteristics of the building envelope and implementing a heat-recovery ventilation system on the building's energy consumption, taking into account energy efficiency requirements for different regions of Ukraine.

Methods The research methodology is based on mathematical modelling of thermal processes within a building using building physics methods in accordance with current regulatory requirements. The analysis was performed for several scenarios of building insulation and the installation of a heat-recovery ventilation system, determining the building's energy demand across different climatic zones of Ukraine.

Results The hourly variation in the energy load for heating and domestic hot water supply was obtained for a building in Kyiv over a calendar year. The impact of increasing the thermal resistance of the insulation on reducing winter heat losses, as well as its effect on increasing the cooling load during the summer season, was quantitatively assessed for various cities in Ukraine. The potential for reducing the building's energy demand through the integration of ventilation systems with different levels of exhaust air heat recovery efficiency was determined. Furthermore, the difference in seasonal energy loads between Kyiv and Odesa was established for a combined building retrofit scenario.

Conclusions The research findings justify the need to implement energy-efficient solutions tailored to regional climatic characteristics: northern regions require measures to minimize heat losses and improve heating system efficiency, while southern regions must account for the risks of summer overheating and incorporate passive cooling strategies.
