Abstract

This paper presents the experimental evaluation of a dead-time compensation algorithm based on the instantaneous directions of phase currents in a voltage source inverter (VSI). The mechanism by which dead time affects the accuracy of stator voltage vector reproduction is analyzed. The compensation algorithm is implemented in the stationary (a-b) reference frame by introducing a corrective voltage vector whose magnitude and polarity are determined by the dead-time interval and the signs of the motor phase currents. The algorithm was investigated through both experimental testing and mathematical simulation for six dead-time values using two induction motors with different power ratings. The results demonstrate a high level of agreement between simulation and experimental data and confirm that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the nonlinearity of the inverter input-output characteristic and mitigates phase-current waveform distortion over the entire range of investigated dead-time values. The greatest improvement is achieved in the low-output-voltage region, where the influence of dead time is most pronounced.
